Susie Sanchez, a 37-year-old mother of three and grandmother of one, finally made the Raiderettes this year after falling short in four straight tryouts.

Sanchez worked for IBM until 2004, when she quit to pursued her life-long interest in dancing by opening her own dance studio, Dancing Days.

After failing to make the Raiderettes for the fourth time in 2009, she began dancing for the San Jose Wolves of the now-defunct American Indoor Football Association West.

She made the Raiderettes for the first time in May, beating out 232 other dancers.

"It's life changing at that moment,” Sanchez told Pinnacle News of Hollister, California.

At 37, she’s still five years younger than Laura Vikmanis, the oldest cheerleader in the NFL.

Alexa Flutie, the daughter of former NFL quarterback Doug Flutie, made the New England Patriots cheerleading squad this year.

She tried out each of the last four seasons, but didn't make the team until this summer.

Alexa graduated from Dean College with a B.A. in dance in 2010, and is now going into professional dancing.

She told The Fan 590 in Toronto that her dad is behind her, but she doesn't want any preferential treatment:

"Whenever I do something, especially going through auditions I like to be known as myself and not have the notoriety of my dad."

Eagles Cheerleaders

Michelle Morris is an accountant.

On the side, she's a Philadelphia Eagles cheerleader.

Morris started with the team her senior year of college, and now shes heading into her third season cheering for the Eagles.

Twice a week, Morris drives 60 miles from New Jersey to Philly, after her day job, and practices with her fellow cheerleaders for at least three hours.

And then Sundays are the fun part. The Eagles monopolize Morris' Sunday as she gets her hair and make-up done, and cheers her team to victory.

Michelle starts her day off at Withum, Smith + Brown, at around 8 am where she is an accountant

Coffee is a necessity, it's going to be a long day

Then it's to work. Michelle leaves early on practice days, so she has to get all her work done by 4:30

Bianca La Russa, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa's daughter, is no longer a Raiderette after suffering a career-ending injury.

Here's what she tweeted yesterday:

I've had to stop dancing with the Raiderettes, due to degenerative disc disease & multiple bulging/herniated discs...so frustrating.

LaRussa made the team back in April, but has been unable to find her way onto the field this season.

She's no longer listed on the Raiderettes roster.

Melissa Adams lost 85% of her hearing when she was five, but she still dances well enough to be on the San Diego Chargers cheerleading squad.

To make up for her hearing disability, she memorizes each dance start to finish and has a teammate simply tap her on the shoulder as her cue to start.

"If the music were to turn off it wouldn't matter for me because I would just keep going," she told FOX5 in San Diego.

Adams also owns a web development business with her husband.

She tried out for the team five times before finally making it two years ago.

This 100-Year-Old Tradition Is Still One Of The Coolest In College Sports

Yell Leaders

College football is still in full swing.

But it's not just the players on the field that work hard.

At Texas A&M University, home of the Aggies, a group of students known as the Yell Leaders are tasked with keeping school spirit high by leading university fans in chants at football games and other school events.

The campus tradition dates back to 1907 when Texas A&M was an all-male military college.

The five-man group doesn't perform high-flying tricks like traditional cheerleaders, instead using different types of hands signals, called "pass backs," to fire up the stands.

One interesting nugget of information: Republican presidential candidate and Texas Gov. Rick Perry was once a Yell Leader during his days as a cadet at the university.

The Yell Leader tradition dates back to 1907.

During this time, Texas A&M was still an all-male military school.

According to legend, the act started as way to keep women — who were threatening to leave a football game — entertained.

melissa kellerman

Between an NFL team that just can't stop winning and some lovely ladies who are getting beat up on the sidelines and taking it like pros, this week saw a lot of winners in sports.

But of course there are those who continuously disappoint. Like a guy who slammed a football player's head in the ground and then said he was 'misunderstood.'

Right.

WINNER: Melissa Kellerman

Melissa Kellerman, a fourth year cheerleader for the Cowboys got tackled by Jason Witten on Thursday. She popped right up and laughed it off.

We're 85% sure he did it on purpose.

WINNER: The Packers

11-0.

That is all.

WINNER: Kyle Orton

You may thing Orton is a loser, he got cut this week.

But Orton getting cut certainly got people talking about him. He got his time in the spotlight and now he's heading to Kansas City.

This Is What It Feels Like To Be A Cheerleader Flying Through The Air

The 10 Best NFL Cheerleading Squads

$

minnesota vikings cheerleadersThis post originally appeared at CNBC.

Last year's Super Bowl matchup between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers was memorable for many reasons, but one key aspect missing from last year's championship game was a squad of professional cheerleaders. This year, a team with cheerleaders is guaranteed to make the Super Bowl, after Pittsburgh, the only AFC playoff team this year without cheerleaders, was eliminated.

Click here to see the best squads >

In the off-season, one of the best ways for teams to generate buzz and get significant page views on their websites is to have a strong cheerleader page. So we went through all 32 teams, including the ones still in the playoffs, and ranked the top cheerleading squads, taking in consideration everything from presentation of the cheerleaders online, to fan interaction, community outreach and overall success of the cheerleading teams.

Although there is certainly a measure of subjectivity that goes into rankings of this nature, the cheerleader websites and the team’s cheerleader-related marketing campaigns were the major factors in determining this list.

In 2011, 26 teams had cheerleaders for games and have found ways, especially online, to generate revenue from their top cheer teams. As valuations go, NFL teams are hesitant to put a dollar figure on their cheerleading squads, but the use of cheerleaders as a vehicle for marketing is certainly in the public eye.

Here is our ranking of the top 10 teams that make the most of their cheerleading squads, both on and off the field.

10. Atlanta Falcons

Although the Falcons have an extensive library of cheerleaders' photos and videos, the team’s web site is relatively clunky — you have to click on individual photos to see them. Odd strategy, but might lead to more clicks overall. It also created a stand-alone website for the team’s cheerleaders, but it doesn’t look like it’s been updated since last season, with the 2010-2011 swimsuit calendar still “coming soon.”

Regardless, the Falcons have a wealth of interaction with their fans, with plenty of blog posts and Twitter feeds, a great junior cheerleaders program, and a sponsor list that includes nine local and regional businesses.

7. New York Jets

The New York Jets may be coming off a disappointing season, but they are the standout team in MetLife Stadium in one major way: The team’s cheerleaders. The New York Giants are one of six teams without a cheer squad and the Jets have a distinct advantage in the nation’s largest football market.

The team also makes the list for another reason – it features more game-day photos on its website, The Flight Club, than any other team. An added bonus is a nice selection of desktop wallpaper for your computer. The Jets cheerleaders also have a fantastic diversity of outfits, from flight jackets and Santa uniforms to pink pom-poms for breast cancer awareness.

6. Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles' cheerleader site is the only one in the league that, before entering, displays a button warning you of "mature content." The Eagles continue to be among the most aggressive cheerleading squads. The team was the first team to launch a swimsuit calendar app this year (cost $1.99 on the Android), it encouraged fans to “Celebrate the Holidays with the Cheerleaders,” and members of the squad maintain a robust blog.

The squad has engaged in a number of activities, including a trip to the U.S. Military installation Camp Buehring in Northern Kuwait. This year, the cheerleaders will be performing at the Senior Bowl, one of the league’s premiere pre-draft events.

An NFL Cheerleader Says The Biggest Divide On The Squad Is Between Girls With Real Boobs And Girls With Implants

Laura Vikmanis, 43, a Ben-Gal, is the oldest cheerleader in the NFL.

Vikmanis recently wrote a memoir called It’s Not About the Pom-Poms: How a 40-Year-Old Mom Became the NFL’s Oldest Cheerleader – and Found Hope, Joy, and Inspiration Along the Way about how becoming an NFL cheerleader changed her life.

In a recent interview with the Cincinnati Enquirer about her book Vikmanis revealed that not all 36 girls on the squad got along. But the surprising statement is where the divide on the team comes from:

"The most prominent division on the Ben-Gals is not between the young girls and the older girls but between the Real Boobs and the Fake Boobs. This is despite the fact that at any given time, a third of the Real Boobs are considering implants," she told the Enquirer.

This may have to do with the intense competition about body image on the squad. Vikmanis also said the girls must weigh in every practice and if they are three pounds above their "goal weight" you get benched for the next game.

All of that, and they only get paid $75 per game.

A Cincinnati Bengals Cheerleader Was Indicted For Allegedly Having Sex With Her Student

Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader Sarah Jones faces felony charges after being indicted for allegedly having sex with a student yesterday.

Jones was a high school teacher in Kentucky before abruptly resigning for "personal reasons" last fall, Cincinnati.com reports.

She's being charged with first-degree sexual abuse and unlawful use of electronic means to induce a minor to engage in sexual or other prohibited acts, both of which carry a prison sentence of up to five years.

Her mother was also indicted on tampering charges. Both of them deny any wrongdoing.

Jones is the captain of the Bengals cheerleading team, and isn't a stranger to the spotlight. She sued TheDirty.com in 2009 after commenters on the site accused her of sleeping with Bengals players and having two STDs.

"To stand in front of thirty 15 year-olds and tell them you don't have two STDs and that you are not a slut is the hardest thing you will ever have to do," she told ABC news at the time.

Here's the mugshot:

A Denver Broncos Cheerleader Thinks Her Job Is Harder Than Being A Football Player

Denver Broncos cheerleader auditions were last week, and of the more than 60 women who tried out, 26 found out they made the team yesterday, according to the Denver Post.

The Denver Post also put up this video of the auditions, and a couple of interviews with girls trying out for the squad.

Christina, a second-year Broncos girl, had some interesting things to say about making the squad, including the fact that she thinks it's harder to be a cheerleader than a football player. Now, don't get me wrong, dancing is hard, and auditions are grueling, but it's hard to compare being a Broncos cheerleader, to a Broncos football player...

China Smack Cheerleaders

Travelers in airports are an uptight bunch. And if the flight is delayed, they can be far more than a tad irritable.

But one airport in China found a great way to relax nearly 5,000 passengers that were delayed by heavy fog.

According to China Smack, Dalian Airport enlisted cheerleaders to perform for the stranded masses that were caught inside the terminal.

The cheerleaders danced and did aerobics to entertain the travelers. It sounds like the plan worked.

Check out more shots on China Smack.

Back in February, 55-year-old Sharon Simmons, a grandmother, announced she would finally live out her dream of auditioning for the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders.

Simmons followed through on her promise and auditioned alongside hundreds of other, we're sure much younger women, on Saturday.

Simmons wanted to audition ever since she was 22 and a single mother. But it was too hard at the time to raise her children, make money, and be a cheerleader.

Here's video from the auditions on Saturday:

Federal Court: Cheerleading Is Hard, But It's Not Really A Sport

An appeals court has ruled the "time has not yet arrived" for cheerleading to become a sport.

The Second Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that while "cheerleading can be physically challenging," it still can't be considered a competitive sport, The Wall Street Journal's Law Blog reported Tuesday.

The ruling upholds a lower court's decision in a 2009 lawsuit filed against Quinnipiac University.

The university's women's volleyball players and coach sued the school for failing to provide equal athletic opportunities for women when it dismantled the team and tried to make up for the loss by adding new spots to the competitive cheerleading program, the Connecticut Post reported in 2010.

The volleyball team claimed the school's action violated Title IX, a law signed in 1972 that banned gender discrimination in any educational program.

A federal judge at the time ruled that the school had indeed violated Title IX because cheerleading isn't a competitive sport.

And while the Court of Appeals backed up the ruling, it still gave some glimmer of hope to those who long for cheerleading to be considered a sport.

The court acknowledged that the sport can be physically challenging and stated that with "better organization and defined rules" it might one day be considered a sport, according to The Law Blog.

But that time "has not yet arrived," the court ruled.

NFL Cheerleaders Through The Decades [PHOTOS]

As football has changed and evolved through the years, so have the cheerleaders.

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, cheerleaders stuck to leading the crowd and cheering on their teams with big poofy pom-poms.

Now, a lot of cheerleading squads have added on a dance element as well, and their outfits have gotten a lot... flashier.

The Baltimore Colts had cheerleaders in the early '60s

Florida State Seminoles college football

We learned quite a bit from the first weekend of college football.

Michigan is not ready for the big time, while Alabama is more than ready to defend its title.

Oklahoma and South Carolina may not be as good as advertised.

And the Oklahoma State and West Virginia offensive juggernauts picked up right where they left off last year.

That's all the boring stuff, though.

Here we've put together some of the best catches, hits, and weird fan reactions from the long weekend just in case you missed them.

Enjoy.
